How We Created HeatSponge

We wanted a unit with an easy-to-install shape that would facilitate almost all common types of installations.

To reduce costs and provide customers with a unit easy to be field maintained we designed a unit with no pressure welds required. The tubes connect to the headers via a threaded fitting connection.

We wanted the user to be able to replace tubes without welding but did not want the customer to have to bear the expense of replacing the entire bundle if the failure was limited to only a single element. To make maintenance easiest our design allows for replacement of individual tube elements and not the entire heat exchanger bank.

We did not want our customers to be burdened with the additional costs of purchasing interconnecting ductwork to connect to the boiler and the stack so we integrated it into our unit. Every unit is a one-piece until that integrates the economizer and inlet and outlet stack transitions in a single, insulated piece. Unlike other units our economizer is factory insulated.

To make installation less expensive the entire unit including inlet and outlet adapter pieces are supplied in one shop-built unit. Our unit is installed as a single piece.

We did not want water from rain, condensation, or a potential tube lead to flood the boiler so the bottom of every unit features a "water-trap" that catches condensation, rain, or water from a failed tube and channels it to a drain connection before it has an opportunity to enter the boiler.

We wanted our unit to provide the best heat transfer so we utilized three-quarter inch boiler tubes to provide for excellent heat transfer inside of the tube. Every tube features extended surface finned tubing.

We wanted potential customers to be able to tailor a unit to their application and be able to see predicted performance and unit pricing at any time. For this reason we developed our unique Internet-based software featuring Bruce, our on-line sales engineer. This software places the ability to predict performance and estimate unit pricing directly in the hands of our customers.

Our economizer reflects the results of our efforts. We are proud of the unit and believe it represents exactly what the market demands: a simple and effective unit, readily available performance and pricing information provided on-line, competitively priced, and easy to install.

HeatSponge SHORTY Models

The SHORTY models reflect our desire to engineer a simple and economical boiler economizer. While there are other manufacturers that offer products that also recover energy, what we recognized was the need in the boiler industry for an economizer that was simple to select, procure, and install, provided excellent heat transfer properties, and was economically justifiable for smaller boiler installations. We recognized the opportunity in the industry for a unit designed to provide a maximum longevity.

We wanted a unit with an easy-to-install shape that would facilitate almost all common types of installations.

Since all coiled units by their nature are very difficult to repair in place combined with the fact smaller installations tend to see more thermal cycling and agressive operation all metal exposed to the flue gas on our unit is manufactured out of stainless steel. This includes the tubes, fins, inner casing, baffles, and internal supports. The extensive use of stainless steel provides a maximum unit longevity.
